🛡️Preparing for the CRA.🛡️ How to carry out a risk assessment? A cybersecurity risk assessment helps manufacturers identify, analyse, and address risks that could impact the confidentiality, integrity, availability, safety, and intended operation of a product. It's a requirement of the CRA. Existing safety risk assessment methodologies can provide a useful foundation, though additional cybersecurity-specific considerations are needed. Tools that support the process: ⚙️ CIA. The confidentiality, integrity, and availability triad helps identify which characteristics of your assets are at risk under attack. ⚙️Threat modelling (e.g. STRIDE) helps identify techniques commonly used by attackers to compromise your system. ⚙️MITRE ATT&CK® knowledge database of tactics and techniques used by attackers in real-world cyber-attacks. A typical risk assessment includes these steps: 1. Identify the assets that require protection 2. Identify threats that could impact those assets 3. Identify vulnerabilities that could enable those threats 4. Analyse potential impact and likelihood 5. Determine whether existing controls sufficiently reduce the risk 6. Define additional mitigations where required 7. Reassess residual risk after mitigations are applied Outputs from component identification, vulnerability assessment, supplier due diligence, and secure development planning all feed valuable context into this process. When identifying assets, consider data, essential functions, safety-relevant interfaces, connected systems, component integration, and the security needs of development, production, and distribution. Note: cybersecurity risk assessment also connects to the Machinery Regulation, which focuses on machinery safety, including cybersecurity aspects affecting safe operation. Outputs may be reused between the two, but each regulation must be considered independently. The output: a documented set of cybersecurity risks, associated mitigations, and residual risk decisions.
